SIU Investigates Fatal Collision Between a Police Cruiser and a Motorcycle in Windsor

TORONTO, July 14 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking
into the circumstances and sequence of events surrounding a collision between
a Windsor Police Service vehicle and a motorcycle that resulted in the death
of the motorcyclist.
On Sunday July 13, 2008, shortly before 2 a.m., two male officers were in
their marked cruiser on County Road No.42 between Concession Roads No.8 and
No.9 responding to a call about a man running into traffic when their vehicle
was struck from behind by a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, 30-year-old
Adam Muzyka of Windsor, was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.
There is no apparent connection between the collision and the initial call to
which police were responding.
A post-mortem conducted today confirmed the cause of death as multiple
trauma to the chest. Toxicology tests will be carried out.
The SIU is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident or
may have any information about it to contact the Unit at 1-800-787-8529,
extension 2293.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
