SIU Investigates Custody Injury involving the Barrie Police Service

    TORONTO, Sept. 26 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
appealing for witnesses to an incident involving officers of the Barrie Police
Service in which a local man was injured.
    Officers were called to the Leticia Heights area of the city, near
Barrett Crescent and McVeigh Drive, just after midnight on Sunday September
14, 2008, in response to a call concerning an alleged domestic assault
occurring in the street. A man was taken into custody in connection with this
    The Barrie Police Service has charged 47-year-old Michael Ronald Thompson
of Midhurst with assault and breach of probation.
    The SIU is appealing for anyone, who either witnessed this incident or
may have any information about it, to contact the Unit at 1-800-787-8529,

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
