SIU Investigates custody death in Pickering

    TORONTO, Nov. 10 /CNW/ - Two Investigators and two Forensic
Identification Technicians from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are
investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 47-year-old man
while in police custody.
    Durham Regional Police Officers were investigating a motor vehicle
collision on Williamson Drive East in Ajax on Friday, November 9th, 2007 at
approx. 10:20 PM. A man was arrested and transported to 19 Division in
Pickering. While in custody he went into distress and was transported to
hospital by ambulance. He died shortly thereafter.
    The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact
the Unit at 1-800-787-8529.

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
