MISSISSAUGA, ON, Aug. 25 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU)
has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to probe a
fatal collision in Barrie that occurred early this afternoon.
The Barrie Police Police Service (BPS) contacted the SIU today at 4:20
p.m. and reported that just after 3:30 p.m. an officer attempted to stop a
Mitsubishi automobile in the area of Ferndale Drive and Tiffin Street. The
vehicle did not stop and a pursuit was initiated. In the area of Essa Road and
Ferndale Drive the Mitsubishi was involved in a collision with a Honda Civic.
The driver of the Honda, a 48 year old Barrie man, was extricated from his car
by fire department personnel. Both he and the driver of the Mitsubishi were
taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital. Shortly after 4:00 p.m. the driver of
the Honda succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 15 year
old Barrie youth, was treated at hospital for minor injuries.
The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
