SIU Continues to Investigate Off-duty Death of Peel Regional Police Officer in Cambridge

    TORONTO, June 17 /CNW/ - Further to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU)
news release of June 13, 2008, a post mortem examination was conducted at the
Hamilton General Hospital on June 14, 2008. It was determined that the
41-year-old officer died as a result of a single gunshot wound. Police are
seeking no suspects in connection with this case. The SIU investigation
continues with regard to the sequence of events leading up to the discovery by
police of the officer's body in his personal vehicle.

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
