SIU Appeals for Witnesses to an Arrest by Toronto Police

    TORONTO, July 16 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
appealing for witnesses to an incident involving Toronto Police Service
officers one week ago.
    On Wednesday July 9, 2008, at approximately 11:00 p.m., two constables
were in their cruiser at the parking lot of the Galleria Mall at the corner of
Dufferin and Dupont Streets. They became involved in a confrontation with a
man, who was subdued after a struggle and held in custody for investigation.
    The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident or who may
have any information about it to contact the Unit at 416-622-2314 or
1-800-787-8529 extension 2314.

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
