TORONTO, March 8 /CNW/ - Former Canadian Idol Melissa O'Neil and star of
"Degrassi: The Next Generation" Lauren Collins were just two of the Canadian
celebrities who helped judge day one of the Real Canadian Anthem Search choir
competition yesterday at Assembly Hall in Toronto. The afternoon featured
performances from grade 6 to 8 public school students from across the GTA
competing for a chance to sing the national anthem at a Raptors game and to
win $3,000 for their school music program.
"It's always great to be involved with any program that promotes youth
talent," says Melissa O'Neil. "I know if I was ever given the opportunity to
do something like this I would have jumped at the chance."
Other local celebs and music industry VIPs who sat on the judging panel
were former "Rockstar: INXS" contestant and singer-songwriter Tara Slone,
Disney Power Ranger Matt Austin and Nicole Stamp, host of TVOntario's "Reach
For The Top" and "TVOKids: The SPACE."
Sponsored by Real Canadian Superstore in association with Maple Leaf
Sports & Entertainment, the competition includes a category for choir groups
from grades 6 - 8 and soloists from 13 to 19 years of age. Choirs take part in
two days of regional competitions that began yesterday and continue on March
21st. Soloists can enter by uploading their video at www.superstore.ca or
auditioning in-person at select Ontario Superstores until March 18th. Eight
from each category will be selected to advance to the finals at Air Canada
Centre on March 26th where a winner from each category will be chosen.
The winning choir group will receive a $3,000 donation toward their
school's music program and will sing at the Raptors game on April 13th. The
winning soloist will sing at the Leafs game on April 3rd and will receive
$1000 in prizes and $2000 to be donated to their charity of choice.
