New Pulsed Light Device Takes Laser Hair Removal Out of The Doctor's
Office - And Into Your Home
TORONTO, Aug. 28 /CNW/ - Hair removal, the tedious, often daily procedure
undertaken by millions of women worldwide, and on which women spend millions
of dollars, is becoming much easier. With Silk'n(TM), laser light-based hair
removal like the procedures women undertake at med spas and dermatologists'
offices is now available at home.
Developed by Home Skinovations Ltd., a global leader in home-use light
and laser technology, Silk'n is a safe, simple and easy to use hand-held
device that uses Home Pulsed Light technology to capture all the clinical
benefits of pulsed light for hair removal at home.
Tested by top dermatologists, plastic surgeons and cosmetic physicians in
a year-long clinical trial, Silk'n achieved results comparable to in-office,
professional treatments safely and with minimal discomfort compared to waxing
or professional laser treatments. The convenience of at-home use, combined
with cost effectiveness, along with the exceptional results of Silk'n make it
important news. A series of laser hair removal treatments in a med spa can
range from several hundred to several thousand dollars.
"My clinic, SpaMedica, along with clinics in Washington D.C. and Tel
Aviv, participated in the clinical trials and we were very impressed with the
results," says Toronto cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Stephen Mulholland. "With
Silk'n offering professional results at home, many, many women are going to
embrace it. They are going to find that Silk'n's ergonomic design makes hair
removal simple and they are going to like the fact that they can use it in the
comfort and privacy of their own home."
How Silk'n Works...
Light-based hair removal - used successfully in clinics for more than 15
years - is based on the theory of selective photothermolysis in which optical
energy is used to disable hair growth. When a pulse of intense optical energy
is released from the Silk'n device it is selectively absorbed in the hair
shaft and transformed into heat while the surface epidermis and surrounding
tissue is protected, disabling hair growth.
Silk'n has been designed to treat hair growing on the legs, underarms,
arms and bikini line. Silk'n treatments, which can take as little as 5 minutes
for an underarm or 30 minutes for a leg, are intended to be spaced every two
weeks for the first few sessions and then as needed until desired results are
achieved. Maintenance treatments can be undertaken whenever there is evidence
of hair re-growth.
Since it is the melanin pigment in hair that absorbs the light energy,
darker hair, which has more melanin, will get the best results. Black and dark
brown hair responds best while blonde, grey and white hair do not respond
well. As a result Silk'n is best used on lighter skin types; Silk'n should not
be used by people with black or brown skin due to the amount of melanin in the
Final results occur over time because of the particular nature of a
hair's cycle of growth. Hair goes through a three phase growth cycle, two of
which are resting stages. And at any given moment the majority of hair
follicles are in a resting stage. It is hair that is in the growing, or
Anagen, stage that responds to Silk'n treatments. When hair growth is
disabled, long-term hair removal is achieved.
Silk'n Is Safe...
Designed with safety as a paramount consideration, a light pulse can only
be emitted when the applicator tip is placed firmly on the treatment area,
eliminating the possibility of an accidental flash in the direction of the
user's eyes. Wearing eye protection is not necessary.
Silk'n is priced at $800 and will be available at SpaMedica and other
selected physician and med spa outlets.
