SEIU Local 1 Canada members endorse Horwath for NDP leader

TORONTO, Feb. 10 /CNW/ - Sharleen Stewart, President of Service Employees
International Union (SEIU) Local 1 Canada, declared SEIU members support for
Andrea Horwath in her bid to lead Ontario's New Democrats.
"It's time for a new generation of leadership in Ontario. Andrea Horwath
is a strong woman, a committed advocate for change, and the best choice to
lead Ontario's New Democrats," said Stewart.
The Service Employees International Union Local 1 Canada represents more
than 46,000 health care and community services workers in Ontario. SEIU Local
1 Canada has a track record of improving wages, benefits and working
conditions for members, as well as strengthening standards in patient and
client care. Our members work in hospitals, home care, nursing and retirement
homes and community services throughout the province.
SEIU Local 1 is affiliated to Ontario's New Democrats and after meeting
with all of the candidates has decided their delegates will vote unanimously
in support of Andrea Horwath at the Ontario NDP Convention in Hamilton March 6
- 8.
"There are four very strong candidates and our choice was not easy," said
Stewart. "The working women and men who make up our union are facing tough
times, like all Canadians, we need the strong leadership and new vision that
Andrea Horwath can provide."
