Sedgwick CMS and UnitedHealth Group to Develop Integrated Disability, Employers

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Dec. 7 /CNW/ -- Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc.
(Sedgwick CMS) and UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) today signed a letter of
agreement to develop and operate a program for the integrated servicing of
employer-sponsored disability, group medical and workers' compensation plans
along with FMLA and other employee leave and absence programs.
"The traditional practice of stand-alone delivery systems for workers'
compensation, disability, group health and leave of absence programs exposes
both employers and employees to confusing compliance requirements," said
Sedgwick CMS President and Chief Executive Officer David A. North. "It also
increases the difficulty of achieving optimal treatment, return-to-work and
long-term wellness outcomes. Our industry has made significant advances in
recent years through integrated disability and total absence management
strategies. Now Sedgwick CMS and UnitedHealth Group are taking a breakthrough
step toward a truly comprehensive solution."
The goals of the new service will be to improve the overall health and
productivity of workers and manage benefit costs more effectively by
streamlining program utilization for claimants, establishing systems for
information sharing and collaboration among program support specialists, and
organizing services and support around comprehensive recovery strategies for
The system will utilize a triage approach and deep level of integration
to expedite the identification of needs and the timely referral of cases.
Employees of participating Sedgwick CMS/UnitedHealth Group clients will have a
single telephone number and Web site for access to all medical and absence
program administrative support. Intake representatives will work with callers
to set in motion the coordinated delivery of the appropriate combinations of
claims processing and care management services for their needs. Sedgwick CMS
and UnitedHealth Group specialists will be co-located in client-dedicated
teams to facilitate the identification and integrated delivery of services and
Subject to applicable privacy regulations, the service process will
operate from a unified data record for each claimant. This information will
be used to minimize duplications of effort; create processing efficiencies;
and eliminate gaps, redundancies and opportunities for abuse in the provision
of medical care and leave entitlements. Employers will have access to the
data through online tools and outcome-oriented reports that will enable them
to manage employee health and productivity more effectively.
Sedgwick CMS will provide administration of workers' compensation and
disability claims as well as FMLA and other absence management services.
UnitedHealth Group will provide health insurance, vision, dental, life,
wellness, employee assistance program (EAP) and related customer services
through its Uniprise affiliate. Additionally, on-site rehabilitation and
vocational specialists will be available to assist the clinical team with
return-to-work issues.
"When individuals are absent from work for any reason, they may often
experience related medical and behavioral health care issues," said
UnitedHealth Group Executive Vice President of Clinical Strategy Miles
Snowden, M.D. "We are learning more every day about the roles of prevention,
co-morbidities and early intervention in determining worker health and
productivity. The collaboration we are announcing today will enable
UnitedHealth Group and Sedgwick CMS, drawing on their extensive resources and
complementary areas of expertise, to respond quickly to the real points of
need as they emerge."
"Employers and employees alike will share in the advantages of improved
worker health, reduced lost time and lower overall costs," concluded Sedgwick
CMS's North.
