Second Quarter Conservation Results for 2007 - A Strong Energy Conservation Culture is Emerging

    OTTAWA, Sept. 5 /CNW Telbec/ - Six of Ontario's largest local electricity
distribution companies, cooperatively delivering energy conservation programs
as the Coalition of Large Distributors (CLD), are pleased to provide an update
on activities in their respective service areas during the second quarter of
    In the second quarter of 2007, Coalition members collectively invested
more than $2.9 million on conservation programs. Over the past two years the
group has invested more than $68 million on programs geared to helping
customers conserve electricity.
    "Together we have invested approximately 90% of the funds that were made
available to us in 2005 by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) for Conservation and
Demand Management (CDM) activities. We are proud of what these funds have
accomplished in terms of increased awareness about the importance of
conserving electricity, real reductions in energy consumption, and the solid
base that has been established for energy conservation programs in Ontario,"
said Rosemarie Leclair, President and CEO of the Hydro Ottawa Group of
    The Coalition of Large Distributors, including Enersource Hydro
Mississauga, Horizon Utilities Corporation, Hydro Ottawa Limited, PowerStream
Inc., Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited and Veridian Connections Inc.,
serves 1.7 million Ontario customers, or 40 per cent of the province. In 2006,
the second year of delivering CDM program in their respective service
territories, these utilities helped their customers conserve a total of more
than 300 million kilowatt hours (kWh), enough to power more than 33,000
Ontario homes for one year. The CLD continues to deliver new and innovative
programs with the goal of reducing electricity demand and creating a culture
of conservation in Ontario.
    Working with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), the Electricity
Distributors Association (EDA), municipalities, other local electricity
distribution utilities, and the Government of Ontario, the CLD committed to
delivering over $75 million in comprehensive conservation programs over a
three-year period as part of the CDM spending approved by the OEB in 2004. The
CLD members are also now delivering additional CDM programs that are funded by
the OPA.
    "We take our leadership role in promoting energy conservation very
seriously, and will continue to look for innovative ways to help our customers
save electricity," said Leclair.

    Highlights for the second quarter of 2007 include:


SOURCE - Highly successful and first ever "switch4earth" event held. This was an Enersource-developed compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb distribution campaign across the City of Mississauga in conjunction with Mississauga Earth Days on Earth Day weekend. In two days, Enersource distributed more than 70,000 CFLs at all of the Loblaws and Real Canadian Superstore locations in Mississauga, and at a family Earth Day event at Civic Square, City Hall. - Enersource completed its peaksaver(TM) pilot program by successfully reaching 1600 customers. HORIZON - Highlights from Horizon Utilities' powerWISE(R) Energy Audit Program included the successful completion of five energy audits at local Hamilton and St. Catharine's arenas. The arenas included Rosedale Arena and Mohawk 4 Ice Centre in Hamilton as well as Bill Burgoyne Arena, Garden City Arena and Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre in St. Catharines. These audits generated a total incentive of $34,000. Horizon Utilities looks forward to supporting the energy retrofits that will take place as a result of these audits. - Under the powerWISE Business Incentive Program, Horizon Utilities provided incentives for a substantial custom retrofit undertaken by the City of Hamilton resulting in a 290 kWh reduction in electricity consumption. In addition, Mohawk College, located in Hamilton, initiated a massive lighting retrofit, including the replacement of more than 8,600 lights throughout the campus. HYDRO OTTAWA - Hydro Ottawa launched three summer energy conservation programs with the support of the OPA: "Summer Savings", "The Great Refrigerator Round Up" and peaksaver(TM). The launch took place on June 23 at a Tartan Homes' ENERGY STAR show home in Stittsville, and was supported by live remote broadcasts on two local radio stations. - Hydro Ottawa's Conservation Van was in demand during the second quarter. Activities included visiting 22 schools to speak about electricity conservation to more than 1300 Grade 5 students, and participating in 26 community and customer events. POWERSTREAM - PowerStream donated 2,600 CFL bulbs to two social housing buildings in Richmond Hill. The donation was made through the Social Housing Services Corporation's (SHSC) Green Light Initiative, which connects Ontario's social housing community with tools and incentives to lower their energy use and costs. It is expected that the donation of CFL bulbs will save the two buildings 129,075 kWh of energy annually. - PowerStream partnered with The Home Depot Canada to launch "Catch the Sun", an in-store national event that helps customers learn about the many ways they can work with the sun to take action and be more energy conscious around the home. The official launch included an unveiling of a retail solar powered installation at The Home Depot location in Woodbridge. The installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels over the Woodbridge store's Garden Centre area now provides the facility with up to 20kW of clean energy. TORONTO HYDRO - Toronto Hydro, with support from the OPA, continued with its demand response program, peaksaver(TM). This is the first peak-shaving program offered whereby residential and commercial customers volunteer their air conditioning units for load control (on extremely hot days when electricity demand needs to be reduced). Since launching peaksaver(TM) in 2006, the company has been able to sign up 32,000 customers, equaling approximately 40MW of peak demand savings. - Toronto Hydro launched the Business Summer Challenge - the first business program to reward business customers with a 10% rebate if they manage to conserve 10% of their power use in July and August. VERIDIAN - Due to continued strong customer demand for its "Tune Up and Save" program for electric water heaters, Veridian expanded its target for this program to 1,250 participants. By the end of the second quarter, more than 639 water heater tune-ups had been completed. In addition, Veridian received another 676 customer calls to potentially schedule a tune up. - Veridian brought the "Keep Cool" air conditioner retirement program and their halogen torchiere exchange initiative to Belleville. Exchange events were held over three weekends in June at the Belleville Home Depot during which Veridian collected and retired 336 old, inefficient window air conditioners resulting in energy savings of approximately 231kW. In total 166 energy guzzling halogen torchiere lamps were collected and recycled. In addition, the CLD installed 127,230 smart meters during the second quarter of 2007 bringing the total installed by the Coalition to more than 557,000.
