Science Fiction and Acoustics: The Palais des congrès de Montréal secures two new international conventions

MONTREAL, Nov. 29 /CNW Telbec/ - The Palais des congrès de Montréal is
proud to announce that it has signed two new international conventions to its
calendar of future events: the 67th World Science Fiction Convention
attracting 4,000 participants from August 6 to 10 in 2009 and the 21st
International Congress on Acoustics, to be held jointly with the 165th Meeting
of the Acoustical Society of America, bringing 2,300 delegates from June 2 to
7 in 2013.
This marks the first time that the World Science Fiction Convention, or
Worldcon, will take place in a francophone city. "In Montréal, our
participants will have the chance to explore the world of fantasy and science
fiction as seen through the eyes of francophone writers. Worldcon is a unique
opportunity to discover today's French-language authors, because apart from
Jules Verne, they remain largely unknown by anglophones," explains René
Walling, Co-chair of Worldcon's local organizing committee. "Our delegates are
really passionate about this medium and represent artists, authors, editors,
along with dealers and collectors, including ardent fans of the genre. We'll
explore all aspects of science fiction in this multidisciplinary, bilingual
event: science, music, table games, video games and role playing, among
others. Since Montréal's is such a creative city, the atmosphere will be both
serious and fun."
On a more strictly scientific note, the Acoustical Society of America and
the Canadian Acoustical Association will host the ICA2013, the joint
conference of the 21st International Congress on Acoustics and the 165th
Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America. "Montréal is a unique convention
destination for international visitors. As a safe, cosmopolitan city, rich in
history, it offers a number of tourist attractions and hotels. The city's
location makes it a gateway to North America by air and its Palais des congrès
offers exceptional facilities. These are the prime reasons why Montréal's
candidacy was retained," explains Michael R. Stinson, Chairman of the ICA2013
local organizing committee. "Acoustics is a highly diversified science and the
topics on the program are equally varied: ambient noise and the community,
medical uses for ultrasound, hearing in humans and animals, underwater
acoustics, speech communication and the design of concert halls are some
examples of subjects that will be addressed. ICA2013 will bring together
professionals of all stripes: engineers, physicians, biologists, speech and
hearing specialists, oceanographers, medical researchers and professors. It is
a tremendous occasion for Canadian and North American acousticians to expand
their network internationally."
The selection of Montréal and its Palais as host site for these two
international conventions is the culmination of the strategic efforts deployed
by the Palais sales team. "In the case of Worldcon, the selection was made by
delegates at their conference in Yokohama, which is somewhat unusual, and we
succeeded in tipping the scales in our favour! For the ICA2013, our main
competitor was a popular South American destination. This site had a
particular edge, since the congress has never been held in Latin America, but
Montréal still came out on top," exclaims Jens Christian Bungardt, CMP,
Marketing Manager of the Palais for the international market. "I am
particularly proud that we managed to bring home these conventions since the
particular strategies we designed in close cooperation with the local
organizing committees were considerable assets in the decision to select
Montréal and the Palais."
