Say hello to my furry BFF! More than half of Canadians rank their small dog more important than their friends

New CESAR® brand survey reveals that Canadians share a special connection with their small dog

TORONTO, April 18 /CNW/ - Man's best friend is one of the most common catchphrases when referring to dogs. They are faithful companions, loyal to the end, providing assistance for disabled, bringing love to those in hospitals, nursing homes and schools and taking part in special memories with families that last a lifetime. Perhaps no surprise, a recent survey commissioned by the makers of CESAR® through Leger Marketing found that more than half of Canadians rank their small dog more important than their friends. The makers of CESAR® celebrate this special connection between small dogs and their owners with the launch of CESAR BISTRO™ food for small dogs, a new line of wet food that has high-quality ingredients you can actually see.

"Small dog owners share a very unique connection with their pet, as the dog's size allows owners to involve them in almost every aspect of their lives," says Crystal Caughill, Senior Brand Manager, CESAR®. "Throughout the years, the CESAR® brand has embraced this relationship and now introduces new CESAR BISTRO™ products- four delicious recipes for small dogs that actually look like food you would cook yourself!"

How Special IS Your Small Dog?

Canadians share a special connection with their small dogs; they treat their special friend more like a family member than a pet, with 80 per cent even allowing their dog on the furniture, and more than 60 per cent showering their special friends with gifts on holidays, such as Christmas, Hanukkah, birthdays or Valentine's Day.  Small dog owners are also more inclined to incorporate their pet into their day-to-day activities (78%), like running errands or meeting friends. What's more, over half (53%) of Canadians even plan their vacations around places they can bring their pet - luckily many airlines will now allow small dogs to travel with their owners in a carrier safely stored under the seat.

Throw Bowser a Bone, or it's a Deal Breaker

Would you break up with your significant other if they didn't like your small dog? The survey revealed that nearly half (48%) of the respondents would actually consider cutting ties with their potential mate if they did not get along with their dog! And friends and family are no exception -40 per cent of Canadians would avoid having them over if they weren't 'dog-friendly'. Needless to say, small dog owners want the best for their pet and love them unconditionally, sometimes putting their dog's needs above their own.

Small Dog Relationship 'Guidelines'

By treating your small dog more like a human, you may be doing more harm than good. Just like large dogs, small dogs need a leader and not taking the time to train them can sometimes lead to obedience issues such as being 'yappy' and nipping. Lisa Marshall, a Behaviour Therapist and Trainer at Bark Busters, the largest dog training company in the world, has trained countless dogs and small dog owners about canine behaviour.

"One of the most common issues I see with dog owners is they don't properly train their small dogs and tend to humanize their pets and treat them like playmates. They feel their small dog doesn't need the same training as large dogs, mainly because of its size," says Marshall. "Small dogs need to be trained and treated like dogs, not people. Shockingly enough, only one-third of small dog owners have taken their dog to training classes- a number that draws a correlation between widespread misconceptions that 'yappy dog personality' can't be adjusted."

Marshall has witnessed a lot of different small dog-owner behaviour - she finds that small dog owners are more likely to dress their pet in clothes and bring them on errands.  They have a tendency to carry them around in dog-carriers or purses - even throwing doggie birthday parties with hats and cake! "I have always believed in spoiling your dog with love - no matter what its size - but there are good and bad ways to do this. I believe in, and practice rewarding my dogs with treats and delicious meals, something that is much more fulfilling to a dog than playing dress-up," says Marshall.
