OTTAWA, Jan. 15 /CNW/ - SaskPower's ongoing commitment to environmental
stewardship was recognized nationally today by Pierre Guimond, President & CEO
of the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA). The 2007 Stewardship Award,
under the Association's Environmental Commitment and Responsibility (ECR)
Program, was given to SaskPower for their establishment of the innovative
Emissions Control Research Facility (ECRF) designed to investigate mercury
emission control options.
"The Emissions Control Research Facility demonstrates the electricity
industry's continuing commitment to innovation and excellence," said Mr.
Guimond. He noted that this project will have wide-ranging benefits to the
electricity industry, particularly in raising the understanding of mercury
measurement and control technologies through actual demonstration.
SaskPower's ECRF, located at the Poplar River Power Station, is the only
permanent utility slipstream test facility in Canada and one of the few in the
world. The initial work at the ECRF focused on mercury control through
optimizing the effectiveness of activated carbon injection into a fabric
filter placed downstream of an existing electrostatic precipitator (ESP). The
research and demonstration work at this facility is on-going with plans for
further research on air emission control options.
CEA's Stewardship Award is overseen by a third party adjudication panel,
and recognizes the year's top electricity industry initiative that tangibly
demonstrates environmental leadership, based on specific criteria and
principles. SaskPower's project was chosen for its leadership, for its
innovation and potential for significant reduction of environmental impacts,
as well as for its contribution to the long term sustainability of the
Founded in 1891, the CEA is the voice of the Canadian electricity
