Sarnia man to receive Fire Safety Award

TORONTO, June 20 /CNW/ - Bill Hoad will receive a Fire Safety Advocate
Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at a ceremony on
June 28, 2007 in Toronto. The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding
contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.
As member of the Sarnia Rotary Club since 1980, Bill has volunteered his
time to take part in numerous community activities, in particular those that
support emergency services and the Sarnia Fire Department. Bill's involvement
with the fire department includes assisting with the Get Out Alive program and
coordinating support from the Rotary Club to purchase a thermal imaging
camera, fire prevention materials to educate the community about fire safety
and a command bus for emergency situations. The command bus is set up whenever
the fire department or the police department are doing an investigation, and
is also used for special events.
Most recently, Bill approached Tom Marshall, Public Education Officer
with Sarnia Fire Department with an idea to use the Rotary Club's sign on the
busiest east/west corridor of the city and create fire safety messages with
reusable letters. The idea was approved and has been ongoing for almost two
years. Some of the messages created have included "Tom says develop your home
fire escape plan with your family" and "Tom says never leave cooking
unattended." The signs have gotten noticed. Tom reports his popularity in the
community has risen dramatically.
"Through innovative public education techniques, Bill has garnered public
attention to important fire safety messages for the community," said Fire
Marshal Pat Burke. "Bill has certainly helped to increase the awareness level
about fire safety in Sarnia and surrounding areas."

Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 21 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Monte Kwinter and Fire
Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the Fairmont
Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
