Christian relief organization working with Peruvian partner to offer
CALGARY, Aug. 17 /CNW/ - International Christian relief organization
Samaritan's Purse is providing much-needed emergency aid to earthquake
survivors in Peru through partners currently working on the ground in the
South American country.
Through the already-established relationships of its annual Operation
Christmas Child shoe box program, Samaritan's Purse is working directly with
its Peruvian partner - La Asociacion Cristiana Evangélica para el Desarrollo
(ACED) - to give emergency aid including shelter materials, food and blankets
to earthquake survivors.
"Thank you so much for the love and support you are bringing to us in
these difficult times," said ACED spokeswoman Teresa Choquehuanca. "Every
minute, the statistics become more alarming. Please pray for the families of
the deceased and for the many families left homeless."
Peru has declared a state of emergency after a devastating 8.0-magnitude
coastal earthquake last Wednesday. Strong aftershocks have followed - forcing
survivors to sleep in the streets as they fear for their lives. The worst
damage is in the coastal areas of Canete, Chincha, Ica, and Pisco, where the
death toll has climbed past 500, with over 1,500 injured. Homes, hospitals,
churches, and important infrastructure have been destroyed, and many areas are
without water and electricity - harming more than 80,000 people.
"People are without homes, belongings, or the ability to provide food for
their families," said Canadian Laurent Trabadello, Samaritan's Purse's Latin
America Projects Manager based in Calgary who is traveling to Lima. "Our
partner in Peru is asking for our assistance and we are responding with aid."

Prior to this disaster, Samaritan's Purse was working with ACED to

development projects in Peru.
