Samaritan's Purse Canada helps Caribbean hurricane victims

Christian relief and development organization also responds to crisis
    in Chile

    CALGARY, Sept. 11 /CNW/ - Samaritan's Purse Canada - a Christian relief
and development organization - is helping people ravaged by Caribbean
hurricanes, and Chileans struggling through severe flooding.
The Calgary-based agency and its local partners responded within hours to
the needs in Haiti. A Response Team is on the ground coordinating further
assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike and Tropical Storm Hannah.
Samaritan's Purse is calling on Canadians to help make a difference by
donating generously to its Disaster Relief Fund.
"The needs of the victims have been great, and we anticipate more storms
to come," said Laurent Trabadello, Latin America projects manager for
Samaritan's Purse Canada. "We are asking Canadians for donations so we can
prepare to help even more."
After providing emergency food, water and clothing, Samaritan's Purse
Canada and its local partners are now preparing to help residents clean up and
rebuild their homes.
In the impoverished country of Haiti, the damage so far has been
enormous. The port of Gonaives - the nation's fourth largest city - was
swamped, and as many as 500 people died.
"People were on roofs and there was no way to reach them other than
helicopters," Trabadello said.
In Cuba, as many as 300,000 homes were damaged after Hurricane Ike dumped
up to 38 centimeters of rain on parts of the island.
Meanwhile, severe flooding has made lives miserable in southern Chile,
where winter is just ending and the area is still subject to cold
"These are the worst floods in 30 years," Trabadello said. "Our partner
on the scene reports that the families affected will need significant amounts
of food, blankets, mattresses and hygiene items."
In the past few months, Samaritan's Purse has provided relief to people
in rural Peru who shivered through acute cold temperatures, to victims of
Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, and to victims of the massive earthquake in Sichuan
Province, China.
