"Safety Without Borders" - Update

NIAGARA, ON, April 23 /CNW/ - Yesterday, officers from the OPP Highway Safety Division (HSD) Niagara Detachment, Burlington Detachment and Traffic Support Unit were successful in their highly visible traffic safety initiative, "Safety Without Borders".

This one-day enforcement initiative, on April 22nd, 2011, involved Sûreté du Québec, New York State Police (NYSP), the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) and the OPP. The local portion of the initiative was signified by the symbolic handshake on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls between NYSP Commander, Captain Craig Hanesworth and OPP Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Bill Grodzinski.

OPP officers concentrated their efforts in the Niagara Region on the QEW, Highway 405, 406, and Highway 3. As a result, officers issued in excess of 260 charges that included Impaired Driving, Speeding, Seatbelt Violations, Failing to Move to the Left for Emergency Vehicles, Drug charges under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act, Stunt Driving, and Distracted Driving. Seven commercial vehicles were declared out of service.

In New York State, Troopers checked 250 vehicles, laid 90 speeding tickets, issued 23 fines for Failing to Move to the Left for Emergency Vehicles and 45 other fines.

The "Safety Without Borders" initiative in the east end of the province involved officers from Ontario, Quebec and New York State. They too had a productive day. In the province of Quebec, officers checked more than 300 vehicles, issuing in excess of 115 speeding fines and 50 other traffic violations. Officers seized 3 radar detectors and charged one person for a drinking and driving offence.

Although traffic volume was very high on these roads leading to the borders due to the holiday, no serious collisions occurred.

Chief Grodzinski anticipates further partnerships with these agencies as these patrol initiatives are an integral part of ensuring that all motorists arrive safely to their destinations.
