Rural Broadband: Bloc vs. Liberals

MONTREAL, April 4 /CNW Telbec/ - Following the Bloc Québécois Leader's announcement on high-speed Internet access for rural areas, Marc Garneau, Michael Ignatieff's representative in Quebec, reminds voters that only the Liberal commitment to broadband connectivity can lead to a real investment: "Conservatives are spending $75 million a year for rural broadband: it's clearly not sufficient. The Bloc promises $200 million, but we all know this is an empty promise. The Bloc will not deliver the money. We, the Liberals have committed to investing $500 million over three years to give all Canadians access to a 1.5 Mbps connection within three years; with an even more ambitious goal for 2020."

Indeed, the Liberal Party of Canada has made rural connectivity a central plank of its rural policy. Liberal candidates believe it is unacceptable that companies and citizens in rural areas be disadvantaged compared to those in larger cities.

"We must make sure that the technological revolution does not leave rural Canada behind. Canada must be a leader in terms of connectivity, added Mr. Garneau. Unfortunately, while we ranked second in the world for internet connectivity in 2000, under the Conservatives we've fallen to tenth place. This is a genuine threat to our economic competitiveness. By voting Liberal, Quebec can change this sad state of affairs, whereas voting for the Bloc ultimately promotes the re-election of Stephen Harper and prevents investment in rural broadband."

"With a Liberal government, we'll get $500 million for broadband in rural areas: we'll get more than empty promises," concluded Mr. Garneau.
