Response from JOCC (Jewish Orthodox Community Council) on the recent reports regarding the legality of the Orthodox Jewish Primary and Secondary Schools

MONTREAL, April 21 /CNW Telbec/ - In light of recent negative reports
about the Orthodox Jewish schools in Quebec, we find it important to explain
the facts and timelines about our schools, even though this information is
readily available, it was not requested from us and not reported.
Our Primary and Secondary schools have been operating as legal schools,
some for over 50 years; there has been a recent issue with 3 of our
community's Secondary schools
An issue arose with three community Secondary schools in 2007, those
secondary schools have been not been operating in full conformity with the
MELS, as such their legality was in question. After discussions between the
MELS and those 3 secondary schools, an agreement was signed that will lead
them to become legal schools, and from what we know they have been following
their commitments in that agreement.
The only Primary school in question is the one operated by the Satmar
community. The community has been operating a boys and girls school for the
last 50 years with the governments' knowledge, they have never taken any
government funding, they were told in 2007 that they need to conform to the
MELS regulation. Satmar has since obtained a permit for their girls school,
and for their boy's school, for which they just finished renovations of a
45,000 SQ ft. brand new facility, they are in intense negotiation with the
MELS of obtaining the necessary permits.
In conclusion: The Orthodox Jewish schools except one, have been
operating legally for all those years and never had any problems, as well as
all Secondary Orthodox Jewish schools, except for three, those three that were
not in conformity have already signed agreements to act in accordance with the
MELS, the Satmar primary schools have already obtained a permit for the girl's
school, and the boy's school is on that same path.
