RCMP Seize 1000s of Pirated DVD's

TORONTO, May 6 /CNW/ - Following a six month investigation the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police, Greater Toronto Area Federal Enforcement Section
today charged five persons with offences related to the sale and distribution
of pirated DVD movies.
The RCMP, with the assistance of the York Regional Police Service,
executed search warrants at seven locations at the Pacific Mall on February
6th and 7th seizing in excess of 49,000 pirated DVDs including recently
released DVD movies and movies still in the theaters. Titles included: Bride
Wars, Mall Cop, Marley and Me, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Slumdog
Millionaire, Underworld - Rise of the Lycans, James Bond - Quantum of Solace
and Australia amongst many others. Also seized were over 100,000 blank DVDs
and 217 DVD burners.
Charged with multiple counts under the Copyright Act are:
Huici CHEN (age 36) Chung Ping PANG (age 37) and Tongjin CHEN (age 62)
all of Edgecombe Drive in Markham ON, Ya OUYANG (age 29) of Eagledance Drive
in Scarborough and HuiXin CHEN (age 27) of English Street in Brampton. All are
also facing charges under the Criminal Code of Fraud and Possession of
Property Obtained by Crime.
If convicted they could face fines not exceeding one million dollars or
imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both.
"There are legitimate businesses who are having difficulty staying
solvent because of these pirated DVD's," stated Inspector Peter Goulet,
Officer in Charge of the RCMP Federal Enforcement Section. "The DVD burners
seized were capable of burning 1000s of DVDs and this operation netted these
persons huge profits." Inspector Goulet further stated that "investigations of
this type require the co-operation and support of local police and York
Regional Police were an invaluable partner in this case".
The investigation continues and additional charges are anticipated. The
accused are scheduled to appear in court in Newmarket Court on the 26th of
May, 2009.
