RCMP, OPP seize 4,300 Marihuana plants during Eradication

KINGSTON, ON, Sept. 19 /CNW/ - Between Monday September 15th and Thursday
September 18th, 2008, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Ontario
Provincial Police worked in partnership to conduct Project OSABOT, a marihuana
eradication program in Eastern Ontario. During this operation 1,700 marihuana
plants were located and eradicated. An additional 2,600 marihuana plants were
also eradicated as a result of an additional joint operation between the RCMP
and the OPP. The eradication of a total of 4,300 marihuana plants, has a
significant street value and will have a direct impact upon marihuana
cultivation in the area, act as a deterrent and in turn promote safer
The objective of Project OSABOT is to target the illegal production and
possession of marihuana which is an offence contrary to the Controlled Drugs
and Substances Act. Proceeds derived from outdoor marihuana grow operations
have been linked to the financing of other criminal activities and the
operations of Organized Crime. The success of this initiative has a direct
impact upon our communities by reducing the amount of marihuana available for
distribution both locally and throughout the province.
Working in partnership, all Federal and Provincial services involved in
Project OSABOT shared intelligence and resources to identify and eradicate a
number of outdoor marihuana grow sites in Eastern Ontario. The collaboration
of law enforcement in this joint effort was key to the success of this program
and will enhance future drug enforcement initiatives.
