Rapidly changing technology industry translates to higher-paying jobs

TORONTO, Feb. 5, 2014 /CNW/ - Despite recent years of international economic instability, the technology landscape in Canada has been consistently evolving. From the advancement of application development, to business intelligence and big data, to social media and search engine optimization, technology skills and positions are changing to keep up with industry innovation. There is an increasingly competitive market for positions that support these areas of focus, reflected in this year's Lannick 2014 Technology Salary Report.
"As employers shift their attention from the desktop to the browser, we're seeing a greater salary range in the technology sector with certain roles experiencing more significant increases or decreases in year-over-year pay, than many other industries across Canada," said Igor Abramovitch, Director of Lannick Technology. "Overall, salaries continue to rise as tech positions evolve to keep up with the industry."
Key findings from the annually produced report for employers and candidates include:
- Junior and intermediate positions in high demand - roles at the technical staff level are in higher demand, with less activity taking place at the management and senior management levels.
- A job well done is still done at home - although some companies pursue offshoring to save on costs and take advantage of a 24-hour workday, many employers believe that onshore talent leads to a better product and prefer to hire at home.
- Need for large application talent in Canada - certain skills continue to be more difficult to find in Canada, including candidates with proven experience in complex enterprise projects involving Big Data, Mobile, BI and ERP.
"There is incredibly strong talent in the technology pool in Canada, and we must continue investing in this workforce," said Abramovitch. "Likewise, IT professionals must develop their technical and soft skills to keep up with the progress of the industry, and meet the needs of their employers and the demands of the corporate user."
