Radiant Heat Sets the New Gold Standard for Home Heating in Canada

National survey shows homeowners want home heating systems to provide clean air, energy efficiencies and no more bulky ductwork

TORONTO, Nov. 2, 2011 /CNW/ - Granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and imported tile top many homeowners "must have" lists when they are renovating or building a new home. But the majority of checklists are missing one vital component that will make their home perfect in every way: a radiant home heating system.  An essential finishing touch for all homeowners who are creating the perfect home, radiant heat is the healthiest, most energy efficient and architecturally versatile heating option available in Canada today.

Unlike a traditional forced air heating system which forces hot air into a cold space, a radiant system uses water's own natural heat retention to spread warmth.  Warm water flows through a network of tubes in floors, walls and baseboards, ensuring uniform and even heat in every corner of every room. It also creates a warm, comfortable environment at a lower thermostat setting, and provides zone controls that allow homeowners to lower the temperature in rooms they use less frequently. The result is a home with lower energy bills.

"Radiant heat is quite simply the finest home heating system you will ever experience," says John Goshulak, Heating Ambassador, Beautiful Heat. "When Canadians experience the benefits of radiant heating they will never look back. The air is cleaner, the heat is uniform and there are endless design options. It is the right choice for homeowners who want a home that is perfect in every way."

By eliminating the need for fans, blowers or vents in the floors, radiant heat does not circulate dust, pollutants or allergens, creating a healthier environment that is ideal for allergy sufferers or homes with pets. Not only will the air be cleaner, a radiant system's ductless design, creates extra space by eliminating bulky ductwork and ensures each room in the home has clean, elegant lines uninterrupted by vents or registers.

"When we built our home last year we chose to install radiant heat because it has so many benefits," says Mario Furtado, homeowner and owner, Marana Kitchen. "Not only do our rooms look much bigger without all the bulky ductwork of a forced air system, our heating bill is 40% lower, and our investment will likely pay for itself in less than five years. With the ability to control the temperature in every room of our house, we both feel warm and comfortable all the time ― even in our basement. However, the best thing about radiant heat is waking up to a warm house with warm floors during the cold winter months…and at our age, we deserve it."

A recent national survey conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Beautiful Heat reveals Canadians have a "wish list" of things they would like to have in their homes. Switching to radiant home heating would make many of these items a reality:

Thinking Green

  • 92% want the production of heat in their home to be more energy efficient:
    • Further, 93% want the production of heat in their home to be more economical
  • 90% of those who say some areas of their home are hotter or colder than others wish they could have uniform heating throughout their home and eliminate hot or cold spots

Health Matters

  • 83% wish the air in their home could be cleaner
  • 71% of those who have an allergy sufferer in their home believe the air circulation system in their home contributes to those allergies:
    • Of note, 34% of homeowners say that someone in their household sufferers from allergies due to dust or other air-born allergens
    • In addition, 24% of homeowners say that someone who regularly visits their house (friend or relative) suffers from allergies due to dust or other air-born allergies

Limitless Design

  • 70% would love to have heated floors in their home
  • 53% wish ductwork didn't get in the way of where they could put furniture
  • 72% of those with ductwork wish there were not bulkheads in their basement so their ceiling wouldn't seem so low
  • 39% of homeowners say having areas of the house that are colder or hotter than others gets in the way of achieving an ideal living space

"Although radiant heating systems are relatively new to Canada, radiant heat has been used for centuries, including by the Romans," says Goshulak. "In Europe, radiant systems are the preferred heating method and are used in 95% of European homes today."

Radiant heating works with any kind of floor covering including hardwood, tile or carpet and can be installed over or under existing sub-floors, in concrete slabs and in walls and along baseboards.  Radiant heating can also be extended to luxury features like towel warming, and walkway or driveway snow melting.

Although costs to install radiant home heating may be higher than other heating options, in the long run, radiant heating is the most energy-efficient and cost-effective heating system available.

About the Beautiful Heat Ipsos Reid Survey
Ipsos Reid conducted a poll on behalf of Beautiful Heat from September 19-26, 2011. For this survey, a national sample of 1,003 homeowners from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. A survey with an unweighted probability sample of this size and a 100 per cent response rate would have an estimated margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points 19 times out of 20 of what the results would have been had the entire population of homeowners in Canada been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to, coverage error and measurement error.
