/R E P E A T/ - Media invitation - Université de Montréal to host inaugural colloquium of the International Forum of Public Universities October 11 and 12

    MONTREAL, Oct. 1 /CNW Telbec/ - On October 11 and 12, the Université de
Montréal will host the first international colloquium of a new university
consortium, the International Forum of Public Universities (IFPU), made up of
some twenty institutions on four continents.
    In light of the growing recognition of the advantages students gain from
studying abroad and the benefits society gains when scientific researchers
work together, the forum aspires to support the advancement of society by
creating new models for international collaboration on education, teaching and
    This first gathering of the IFPU will allow member universities to plan
the activities and initiatives they can undertake to meet these needs. The
Universities, Public Policy and Internationalization colloquium will bring
together rectors and presidents of network members or their representatives,
university experts in public policy, representatives from the political world
and decision-makers from major non-governmental organizations.

    11:45 AM - 12:15 PM  Opening reception
                         In the company of his peers, Université de Montréal
                         rector Luc Vinet will make a brief address to
                         inaugurate the conference.

    12:45 - 2:45 PM      Lunch meeting on "Economic Perspectives," with
                         speakers Jamil Salmi, higher education coordinator
                         at the World Bank, and Marcel Boyer, Bell Canada
                         Chair in Industrial Economy at the Université de
                         Montréal and vice-president and chief economist with
                         the Montreal Economic Institute.

    6:00 to 7:30 PM      IFPU protocol signing reception
                         Rectors and representatives of member universities
                         will host a number of important guests to celebrate
                         the official inauguration of the IFPU at the signing
                         of its founding protocol.

    8:00 to 10:00 PM     Dinner meeting on "Perspectives on International
                         Relations," with Jorge Castaneda, former Mexican
                         minister of foreign affairs and political science
                         professor at the New York University Center for
                         Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

                           FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2007

    12:15 to 2:00 PM     Lunch meeting on "Political Perspectives" with guest
                         speaker Thomas Homer-Dixon, George Ignatieff Chair
                         of Peace and Conflict Studies at the Toronto
                         University Trudeau Centre for Peace and Conflict

    3:00 to 4:45 PM      Panel on "Cultural diversity within the University:
                         Growing expectations, different responses," with
                         four IFPU university rectors and both co-chairs of
                         the Consultation Commission on Accommodation
                         Practices Related to Cultural Differences (Charles
                         Taylor, emeritus professor of political science and
                         philosophy at McGill University, and Gérard
                         Bouchard, professor of humanities at the Université
                         du Québec à Chicoutimi).
