/R E P E A T/ - Media Advisory - A National Infectious Diseases Strategy for Canadians - A response to the Throne Speech on National Infectious Diseases Day

    OTTAWA, Oct. 16 /CNW Telbec/ - It is estimated that 1 in 7 Canadians die
of an infectious disease. Of these, up to 12,000 die from infections acquired
in healthcare settings such as hospitals and long-term care facilities. More
than ever infectious diseases are threatening the health and lives of
Canadians. For this reason, organizations representing the infectious diseases
sector are calling on the federal government to lead a national infectious
disease strategy. A position paper outlining strategic requirements will be
released to the public on Thursday, October 18, 2007 on the website
    The following organizations are collaborating on the call for a national
infectious diseases strategy: Canadian Foundation for Infectious Diseases
(CFID); Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada
(AMMI Canada); Community and Hospital Infection Control Association-Canada
(CHICA-Canada); Canadian Association for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious
Diseases (CACMID); International Centre for Infectious Diseases (ICID) and
private-sector industry partners working in the areas of infectious diseases
and medical microbiology.

         What:     National Infectious Disease Day partners will present
                   recommendations for a national infectious diseases
                   strategy and response to the Throne Speech.

    Remarks will be delivered by: Dr. Raphael (Ray) Saginur, President, CFID;
Dr. Michel Laverdière, President, AMMI Canada; Dr. Marc Desjardins,
Councillor, Board of Directors, CACMID; and Dr. Dick Zoutman, Physician
Director, CHICA-Canada.
    Hard copies of the position paper and speaker biographies will be
available on-site. Electronic copies may be requested in advance by emailing

    The contents of the position paper including all its recommendations will
