STORY SUMMARY: WorldSkills Calgary 2009 is taking place from September 1
to September 6, 2009. This marks the second time Canada has hosted the
biennial WorldSkills Competition in its 59-year history. Over 900 young
competitors are participating in 45 skills, trades and technologies categories
on the international stage. The WorldSkills Competition encourages young
people to pursue exciting career options in skilled trades. It also promotes
excellence and global industry competency standards. Competitions range from
robotics to web design, welding to cooking, and auto-body repair to landscape
A major component of WorldSkills Calgary is helping students from across
Alberta gain insight on skills, trades and technologies. In fact, more than
50,000 students are being bussed and even flown to Calgary to experience the
WorldSkills competition and explore potential career opportunities.
SHOT LIST: As competition enters its second day, students are learning
more about the careers available in trades. The first shot is of Guy
Mallabone, Chair of the Board of WorldSkill Calgary 2009. The next clip
explores the WorldSkills 2009 experience with a look at the Shell Launch Pads
- an innovative orientation area; Skill City - where students can try out
skills for themselves; and the Ambassador station and competition. B roll
concludes with Michelle Tiel and Jonathan Reiswig speaking about how
WorldSkills Calgary 2009 has inspired them as they prepare to graduate from
their Alberta high school.
