/R E P E A T -- Video B-Roll Available via CNW - The Salvation Army Opens its Doors Nationwide During Red Shield Campaign/

TORONTO, May 21 /CNW/ - The following video is available by satellite or
by CNW's Broadcast On-Demand web download:

STORY SUMMARY: On May 22nd, selected Salvation Army centres and shelters
across the country will open their doors to the public, giving the media,
local politicians, community leaders and citizens an opportunity to see,
first-hand, the services provided to more than 1.5 million Canadians in need
each year. Across the country, more than a dozen Salvation Army facilities
will host events. The Salvation Army in Toronto will hold a special
ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of its newest facility, Toronto
Harbourlight Ministries -- a multi-service facility including an 85-bed
residential substance abuse treatment program, 98 transitional housing
apartments and Immigration and Refugee Services -- located at 160 Jarvis
Street in downtown Toronto.
The national open house is The Salvation Army's largest one day event
culminating a month-long fundraising campaign -- the May Red Shield Campaign
-- which raises money and awareness for Canada's marginalized and homeless.
This month, The Salvation Army also released findings from a national study on
homelessness in Canada - "Poverty shouldn't be a life sentence" - based on
information from hundreds of men living in Salvation Army shelter care.
The report concluded that a national housing strategy which includes
social services like job training, health care and counseling must be
prioritized by federal officials in order to end the cycle of poverty. The
Salvation Army is the largest nongovernmental direct provider of social
service in Canada - providing about one-quarter of all shelter beds nationwide
each night. For more information, please visit www.SalvationArmy.ca.
