/R E P E A T -- Thousands of canadian children join in "BIG READ" for worldwide education/

OTTAWA, April 16 /CNW Telbec/ - April 20-26 is Global Action Week, and
thousands of children in Canada and around the world are joining hands in a
"BIG READ" to draw attention to the 75 million children in developing
countries who still cannot receive an education. Led by Queen Rania of Jordan
and the Global Campaign for Education, this year's celebration calls on
students to learn about the right to education and read from a collection of
stories by famous authors such as Nelson Mandela, Paulo Coelho, Michael
Morpurgo, and Alice Walker. Canadian writers, including Wayson Choy, Elizabeth
Hay, Jan Andrews, and Frank Edwards, have joined forces with students in more
than 400 classrooms from coast to coast to make Canada's week of action a
success. Students will also add their names to a petition calling on the
Canadian government to do more to support aid to education in the developing
world. Canada's Global Action Week is led by the Canadian Global Campaign for
Education (www.campaignforeducationcanada.org). To connect to local
participating schools, contact Dwayne Hodgson dhodgson@cgce.ca / 613 232 3569
