/R E P E A T -- Mercier Bridge repair work progress - Closure of one southbound lane on August 18, 2008/

LONGUEUIL, QC, Aug. 15 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain
Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) and the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ)
will close one southbound lane on the Honoré-Mercier Bridge on Monday,
August 18, outside the rush hour periods, from 3 am until noon. This closure
will allow the contractor, the Mohawk Bridge Consortium (MBC), to start
repairing 13 connection plates.
Taking advantage of the last weeks to advance the work, the MBC has
conducted numerous steel repairs without requiring lane closures. On Monday
however, a closure will be necessary for more precise work on the plates.
"Our main objective remains reducing the impact for users while assuring
the quality of work and respecting the timing and fixed costs for the
project," said Denis Dauphinais, Director of Construction and Project Manager
at JCCBI. "Safety is paramount and represents a major planning element for
this site. Remember, this work will be done under the bridge structure and
will not be apparent to users. However, this operation is essential to the
bridge repair work and replacement of the deck."

    Closure details and mitigation measures

    - The work will take place on August 18.
    - The southbound closure will not affect the afternoon rush hour. Work
will begin at 3 am and traffic will be restored by noon.
    - The contractor, MBC, has committed to concentrate their work during
this period to limit the impact on users of the road network.
    - For public transportation, close coordination will be maintained with
the Conseils intermunicipaux de transport (CIT) to allow them to
maintain adequate service during peak hours.

In all, nearly fifty plates will be replaced by the MBC during this first
phase, including the 13 plates mentioned above. We will announce further
closures needed to complete the replacement of all plates. These connection
plates link the steel girders under the bridge and their replacement will
strengthen its structure.
