/R E P E A T -- Media invitation - Union of Canadian Correctional Officers to release report on death of Ashley Smith/

    MONTREAL, Oct. 21 /CNW Telbec/ - The Union of Canadian Correctional
Officers (UCCO-SACC-CSN) will hold a press conference at the Radisson Hotel in
Kitchener, Ontario, at 10:30 am on Thursday, October 23, when it will discuss
its report on the year in federal custody of Ashley Smith. The 19-year-old
inmate died at Grand Valley Institution for Women October 19, 2007. The report
will be available online at www.uccosacc.csn.qc.ca on October 23.
    The same Thursday will be marked by early-morning demonstrations in front
of all 58 federal correctional institutions in Canada to show support for the
three correctional officers facing charges of criminal negligence causing
death in this case. Waterloo Regional Police pressed the charges, which carry
a maximum sentence of life in prison, four days after Inmate Smith's death on
October 23, 2007.
