    Meningococcal Meningitis Quick Facts:

    - Each year there are more than 1,000 cases of bacterial meningitis in
Canada, with bacteria spreading through shared items that come in
contact with the mouth, including water bottles shared among team
       members at sporting events.

    - Meningococcal meningitis often begins with symptoms that can be
mistaken for common viral illnesses, such as the flu. But unlike more
common infections, meningococcal meningitis can progress very rapidly
and cause death in 48 hours or less.

    - Four of the five bacterial strains that cause meningococcal meningitis
       (A, C, Y and W-135) are vaccine-preventable.
