/R E P E A T -- Media advisory - FCM welcomes African and Canadian municipal elected officials and practitioners to Ottawa to share best practices on municipal to municipal international cooperation/

    OTTAWA, June 18 /CNW Telbec/ - The Federation of Canadian Municipalities
(FCM) is hosting African and Canadian local government officials who
participate in FCM's Municipal Partnership Program in Africa at a five-day
workshop in Ottawa this week.
    The workshop, MPP Africa Partners' Forum, has been organized to promote
municipal international cooperation through public engagement, increase the
participation of women in local government, and to share best practices among
the partners.
    Sessions on Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19, will include an
address to delegates from M. Abdel Kader Sidibé, president of the Association
des Municipalités du Mali; a session on promoting public engagement in Canada
and throughout Africa; as well as a session on future priorities and
collaboration. The group will also discuss regional priorities for the coming
year at their Regional Partners' Group meeting on Friday.
    FCM has been active in Africa for more than 20 years and, through the
involvement of its membership, builds the capacity of municipalities and
municipal associations in Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana, Tanzania and Mozambique.
Canadian municipalities from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario,
Quebec and New Brunswick share their municipal expertise with their
counterparts in Africa. Of the many partnerships, the City of Ottawa is
currently working with K.E.E.A., Ghana on a sanitation and health project.
FCM's Municipal Partnership Program is funded by the Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA).
    The current phase of FCM's Municipal Partnership Program will end in
March 2010.
    WHAT:  FCM will host Canadian and African local government officials
           during FCM's MPP Africa Partners' Forum in Ottawa from June 15-19.

    WHY:   Canadian and African municipal elected officials and practitioners
           are participating in a program debrief and lessons-learned
           workshop organized by FCM as part of its Municipal Partnership
           Program in Africa.
