MONTREAL, Jan. 14 /CNW Telbec/ - Tenants and homeless people will
demonstrate in Ottawa on Friday, January 16th, outside the First Ministers'
Meeting which is being held to discuss the financial and economic crisis. The
demonstrators want to increase pressure on the Canadian Prime Minister,
Stephen Harper, to include major investments in social housing, in the plan to
deal with the economic crisis, which will be announced on January 27th in the
Federal Budget. Investments in housing would both respond to the nation-wide
lack of low-rent housing and create employment in the forestry, construction,
and manufacturing industries. The demonstrators fear that their problems will
be ignored yet again by the Conservative Government which appears increasingly
obsessed with tax cuts.
The demonstration is organized by the Front d'action populaire en
réaménagement urbain (FRAPRU), a Quebec-wide coalition of 130 groups.
Date: Friday, January 16th, 2009
