    Meningococcal Meningitis Quick Facts:
    - Meningococcal meningitis is a rare but serious bacterial infection
that can be spread from one person to another through close contact
involving secretions from the nose or throat, such as kissing, sharing
       eating utensils or water bottles.
    - Anyone can get meningococcal meningitis, but a large number of cases
occur in children and adolescents from one to 19 years of age.
    - Meningococcal meningitis often begins with symptoms that can be
mistaken for common viral illnesses, such as the flu. But unlike more
common infections, meningococcal meningitis can progress very rapidly
and cause death in 48 hours or less.
    - Four of the five bacterial strains that cause meningococcal meningitis
       (A, C, Y and W-135) are vaccine-preventable.
