PICKERING, ON, April 23 /CNW/ - The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada
has reached a milestone. Having never refused a wish, the national non-profit
wish granting organization granted 950 wishes this past year to Canadian
children, each diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. This year, the
Foundation expects to grant 1,000 wishes as it celebrates its 25th anniversary
in 2009 and one of these will be the Foundation's 15,000th wish since its
"At Children's Wish, we've had the privilege of granting close to 15,000
children their most heartfelt wish," says Chris Kotsopoulos, National
Executive Director, The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada. "While this is
certainly an achievement, we are only able to accomplish this milestone
because of the amazing support we continue to receive from individual and
corporate donors, as well as thousands of volunteers."

Volunteer of the Year award recipients announced

Among these volunteers are Gary and Sylvia (Silver) Peltier from
Woodlands, MB, recipients of this year's Laura Cole Volunteer of the Year
Award. Now in its sixth year, the Laura Cole Volunteer of the Year Award was
established in recognition of the Foundation's founder Laura Cole. The award
is given annually to an individual(s) who exemplifies the spirit of
volunteerism and dedication to the mission of The Children's Wish Foundation
of Canada.
Volunteers with Children's Wish for more than two decades, this husband
and wife team have exemplified what it is to be wish volunteers. Joining the
Children's Wish volunteer team in the very early days of the Foundation, Gary
and Silver believed that much potential for support lay within the rural
communities of Manitoba and set out to establish their sub-chapter as the most
successful in the province.
"It is truly a privilege to be able to recognize and work with volunteers
like Gary and Silver whose talents and accomplishments are as diverse as the
communities they serve," adds Kotsopoulos. "At Children's Wish we have never
refused a wish to an eligible child, and we never will. Thank you for helping
us to fill the lives of so many wish children with a little magic."
Active volunteers, the Peltiers continue to promote the organization in
the rural communities and have also been integral in arranging and delivering
wishes. Through their extraordinary efforts, Gary and Silver Peltier have
gained widespread community recognition as the region's Children's Wish
ambassadors. From establishing a remarkable legacy through their fundraising
initiative, the Annual Ride for a Child's Wish, to educating communities,
receiving wish referrals and supporting other wish events across the province,
the contribution of this dynamic duo has indeed been remarkable.
Mr. and Mrs. Peltier will be formally honoured for their contributions at
a celebration on June 6 which is being held in Winnipeg at the Foundation's
Annual General Meeting.
