Quebec Physician to receive the CMA's Sir Charles Tupper Award for Political Action

OTTAWA, Aug. 15 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Medical Association (CMA)
announced today that its 2007 Sir Charles Tupper Award for Political Action
will be awarded to Dr. Daniel Wagner of Candiac, Quebec. Dr. Wagner will
receive the award in recognition of his tireless efforts to educate
government, policy makers and the public and to advance healthy public policy.
"Dr. Wagner's understated leadership, his hard work and his unwavering
commitment to advocate at both the federal and provincial level is a model for
others to emulate," said CMA President, Dr. Colin McMillan.
Dr. Wagner served as president of the Quebec Medical Association in
2000-01. At the CMA, he helped create the CMA Political Action Committee
(PAC), which was formed in 1980 as an advisory committee to the CMA Board of
Directors. Dr. Wagner went on to serve as Chair of PAC from 2003 to 2006. In
1984 he also helped form the CMA's influential MD-MP Contact Program, of which
he is still a member, Dr. Wagner leads by example and maintains a close
association with his Member of Parliament.
"I encourage my colleagues to take the concerns and the issues they see
every day in their clinics and on the wards and make our policy makers aware,"
said Dr. Wagner. "We have a duty to our patients and to ourselves to make our
voices heard."
Throughout his career, Dr. Wagner has worked tirelessly to raise the
profile of health care as an issue in various policy making fora. As PAC Chair
he brought his considerable diplomacy, experience and knowledge to bear,
through initiatives such as the CMA's annual "Doctors in the House" lobby day
on Parliament Hill.
"Daniel is proof that it takes more than just being the loudest in the
room to be a great leader," added Dr. McMillan. "His keen mind is always
working and when he speaks, people stop to listen."

The Sir Charles Tupper Award was created to recognize physicians who
demonstrate exemplary leadership, commitment and dedication to the cause of
advancing the policies, views and goals of the CMA at the federal level. Award
winners demonstrate a high level of commitment to effective participation in
grassroots political activities.

Dr. Wagner will receive the CMA's 2007 Sir Charles Tupper Award for
Political Action on Wednesday, August 22 at the Association's 140th annual
meeting to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia.
