MONTREAL, Aug. 5 /CNW/ - Following flooding yesterday near Pointe à la
Croix, Québec (near Matapédia) that washed out a rail bridge, VIA Rail Canada
wishes to advise travellers that regular train service on the Chaleur between
Matapédia and Gaspé has been temporarily disrupted.
Until further notice, VIA is arranging alternate transportation for its
customers between Matapédia and Gaspé, in both directions.
As a result, VIA has also been forced to suspend sleeping car ticket
sales for travel between Matapédia and Gaspé. Ticket sales for Comfort class
(economy) seating are not affected.
Consequently, VIA will not be able to accept bicycles or pets for any
stations between Matapédia and Gaspé.
VIA has not yet received information as to how long it will be before the
bridge, the property of Matapédia and Gulf Railway, can be rebuilt and regular
train service can resume.
The Chaleur operates from Montréal to Gaspé every Wednesday, Friday and
Sunday and from Gaspé to Montréal every Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
VIA wishes to apologize for any inconvenience and the expected delays
this disruption may cause to its passengers. Customers wishing further
information may visit our website viarail.ca or call 1 888-VIA RAIL (842-7245)
or TTY 1 800 268-9503 (hearing impaired).
Further updates will be issued as required.
