Psst: Wanna' Buy An Island?

The private 31 acre Kingston retreat that "George W. Bush bought" hits
    the market - again

BATTERSEA, ON, Sept. 21 /CNW/ - Movie stars and captains of industry,
take note: Big Island is back on the market this weekend - and if you act
fast, for a cool $1.379 million you could be calling actor Dan Aykroyd and NHL
hockey legend Doug Gilmour your neighbors.
The exclusive retreat, billed as one of the largest private islands in
Eastern Ontario, was purchased in 2004 by American publishing magnate Robert
S. Brown who "fell in love" with Loughborough Lake and bought the property as
a surprise anniversary present for his wife.
"I thought we'd be spending more time there, but life has taken us in a
new direction," says Brown, publisher of HealthCare Week but best known as
editor and publisher of the internationally best selling quote-a-day calendar
Presidential (Mis)Speak: The Very Curious Language of George W. Bush.
Sales representative Scott Stren of Harvey Kalles Real Estate Ltd. says
Brown's decision to sell means all of those buyers who missed out on the
island first time 'round will get a rare "twice-in-a-lifetime" chance at
"Big Island really is a special property," says, Stren, who will be
showing the site to potential buyers and select media this weekend. "1.25
miles of shoreline, a main house, guesthouse and boathouse, deer and beaver
...all on a 34 km lake that celebrities call home. It's pretty remarkable,
made all the more special by the island's unique history."
Love, he says, has played a role in every transaction involving the
island for almost a century. In addition to the Browns, previous owner Raymond
Hust gave the property to his wife on her birthday in the 1950's - and the
first cottage on Big Island was built in the 1930's by a Cleveland businessman
who needed a getaway for discreet encounters with his mistress.
"Personally, I'm thinking Christmas present this time 'round," Stren says
with a wink.
