Professional Values, Principles and Duties Guide Physicians and Patients

CPSO Practice Guide Lays the Foundation for Principled Medical Practice

TORONTO, Nov. 7 /CNW/ - The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
(CPSO) is pleased to present The Practice Guide: Medical Professionalism and
College Policies. In developing The Practice Guide, we set out to accomplish
three key objectives:

    1. Articulate the profession's values and the principles of medical

    2. Provide assistance to the profession in determining its specific
duties and the reasons for those duties; and

    3. Organize the existing policies of the College within a principled
framework and provide a basis for new policy development.

The Practice Guide was developed in consultation with physicians' groups,
members of the profession and the public to ensure widespread agreement that
the values put forward - compassion, service, altruism, and trust - are
reflective of medical practice today.
"As a practising physician, I know that translating these values and
principles into action isn't always easy, especially on those particularly
hectic days when nothing is going your way. But if the patient-physician
relationship is going to continue to be health care's touchstone, then these
are the ideals to which we need to aspire," says CPSO President Dr. Jeffrey
In developing the guide, we intended it to be useful to multiple
stakeholders, including: practising physicians; patients and the public;
medical students and residents; educators and clinical teachers; other
health-care professionals; administrators; and government and public
officials. In our view, everyone benefits from having a better understanding
of the significant principles that represent medical professionalism
articulated in the guide.

The Practice Guide: Medical Professionalism and College Policies is
available on our website at

"The best quality care for the people of Ontario by the doctors
                                 of Ontario."
