Portage's Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers Program celebrates its 15th anniversary at its annual Open House

MONTREAL, May 6 /CNW Telbec/ - Today, Portage's Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA) centre will be welcoming partners and representatives from hospitals and centres that work with this clientele to its annual Open House event, which takes place during National Mental Health Week.  Now in its fourth year, the event will also mark the fifteenth anniversary of the opening of the MICA centre.

"We are very proud of what our program has been able to do for our residents over the years," says Antonio Maturo, director of the MICA Program. "After fifteen years of service, we have helped more than 200 people with mental health issues to overcome their substance abuse problems and reintegrate into society as active and productive citizens."

Fully adapted to the needs of its clientele, the Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers Program helps residents work through abusive drug and alcohol problems through the development of skills and competencies to help them take back control of their lives. The program is based on the therapeutic community approach, which encourages individual initiative and peer support.  After one year of residential treatment at the MICA centre, residents move into supervised apartments and stay there for six to twenty-four months.  During that time, they continue to take part in weekly support groups and attend personalised consultations and MICA community activities.

During National Mental Health Week, Portage will be raising awareness about the dual problem of substance abuse and mental illness among its partners and the wider public. The Open House will allow Portage to inform stakeholders about the MICA Program, while developing partnerships that promote the ongoing improvement if its services.

During the event, current residents will give testimonials of their experiences before they came to Portage and about how their lives have changed since they have been at the MICA centre. Mr. Maturo will speak about the MICA program and visitors will have the opportunity to meet and network with other guests while enjoying a buffet breakfast.
