Pointe-à-Callière's Archaeological Field School - Significant scientific discoveries about Fort Ville-Marie, the birthplace of Montréal

MONTREAL, Aug. 15 /CNW Telbec/ - Five years after the establishment of
Pointe-à-Callière's Archaeological Field School, and after six dig campaigns,
more and more details about the birthplace of Montréal are being revealed each
year.
Each spring since 2002, Pointe-à-Callière's Archaeological Field School
has been the site of archaeological digs carried out by archaeology students,
professors and archaeologists in an old maritime warehouse located at
214 Place D'Youville. These digs have, for the first time, brought to light
the remains of Fort Ville-Marie, the first French settlement in Montréal.
The 2007 dig campaign led to significant advances in knowledge about the
birthplace of Montréal: first, the presence of certain artifacts confirmed
that the French had occupied Callière Point before 1642, as early as the
beginning of the 1600s. Stratigraphic analysis also revealed that Fort
Ville-Marie underwent several phases of use over the course of it 33 years of
existence. In addition, during the period between the demolition and final
abandonment of the fort in 1674 and the construction of Governor Louis-Hector
de Callière's home in 1695, other activities - which until now had not been
well documented - took place at the Point.
