PMI-Montreal - GALA ELIXIR 2008: Project of the Year Award

MONTREAL, Jan. 15 /CNW Telbec/ - The 3rd edition of the Gala ELIXIR,
presented by PMI-Montréal (Project Management Institute) and Journal Les
Affaires, honours project management excellence. The gala will take place on
January 31, 2008 in the Parquet of the CDP Capital Centre, located at
1000 Place Jean-Paul Riopelle in Montreal.
Three finalists are being honoured for their respective projects:
Anapharm (clinical research), BPR-Bechtel (in-plant engineering) and Hatch
(consulting engineering).
ANAPHARM - Anapharm decided to construct a new head office in Quebec
City's Technology Park and bring together its two work sites. To facilitate
its management the project was divided into three phases: architecture and
design, building construction, and relocalization. Anapharm operates in a
highly regulated environment, and ensuring streamlined operations meant
implementing different strategies and using varied tools, which placed
tangible limits on the project. Planning, organization, leadership,
communication and, especially, a competent project team were all key to the
project's success.
BPR-BECHTEL completed a project to increase the amperage at Rio Tinto
Alcan Primary Metal Group's Grande-Baie and Laterrière plants in the Saguenay
region. Special attention was paid to various technical project management
aspects, namely integration, scale, scheduling, available resources, quality
assurance, human resources, communications, risks, and contracts and
procurement. This resulted in the project being completed a month ahead of
schedule, with final costs 20% less than initial budgeted. The Economic Value
Added (EVA) was CAN$36.7 million, and the Internal Performance Rate (IPR) was
HATCH was fully responsible for various aspects of the expansion of the
ALP (acid lixiviation process) and SPP (scoria preparation process) sectors of
QIT-Fer et Titane's UGS plant in Sorel-Tracy, namely: EPCM (Engineering,
Procurement and Construction Management), process equipment design (reactor,
drier, and classifier), controls programming, and startup. A CAN$145 million
budget was approved in July 2005; the project was completed three months ahead
of schedule in September 2006, with savings of $15 million and without any
compensable accidents.
