PlascoEnergy launches independent public advisory committee to monitor Ottawa demonstration facility

    OTTAWA, April 11 /CNW Telbec/ - At a public meeting today in Barrhaven,
PlascoEnergy CEO Rod Bryden announced the formation of an independent public
advisory committee to oversee the emission test results from the Ottawa
demonstration project.
    "The Ottawa demonstration facility has been equipped with the best
available emissions monitoring equipment, operation of which will be
supervised by an experienced independent professional," said Mr. Bryden in a
presentation to Ottawa residents. "The responsibility of the committee will be
to review and assess the emission testing and the data that will be published
as PlascoEnergy's demonstration project goes into operation. The committee and
its individual members will communicate results and opinions to City Council,
the media and the public."
    "We believe that PlascoEnergy, with the support of the City of Ottawa, is
about to establish the world's most environmentally beneficial way of dealing
with municipal solid waste," said Mr. Bryden. "We will be fully transparent
with all aspects of the operation. We want the community to follow our
progress every step of the way and should there be aspects of performance that
can be improved, we want to know about it so we can make those improvements."
    All emissions data along with the opinions of the Public Advisory
Committee will be posted regularly at the project website:

    The Ottawa demonstration facility will process up to 85 tonnes of unsorted
waste that would otherwise go to the landfill after the recyclables are
removed by the City's blue box and black box program. Up to 8% of the total
waste received by PlascoEnergy will be non-recyclable plastics. This waste
will be converted in a sealed system, without air emissions, to produce
synthetic gas that will substitute for natural gas as fuel for internal
combustion engines to generate electricity. For every tonne of waste
processed, enough energy is generated to power the facility and provide
1,150 Kwh of electricity to the grid-enough to power an average Ottawa
household for 45 days. Impact on the environment, including air emissions from
power generation, will substantially improve upon the stringent limits
established for this demonstration project by the Ontario Ministry of the
