A First in Fire Prevention - the Number One Cause of Household Fire is
DALLAS, Aug. 27 /CNW/ - Pioneering Technology Corp. of Mississauga,
Ontario (TSX-V: PTE), ("Pioneering") presented a first in fire prevention at
the U.S. Department of Defense's Fire and Emergency Services Training
Conference in Dal as yesterday. During the presentation Pioneering presented a
case study featuring U.S. Naval Base, Sasebo Japan. The study confirmed that
the Safe-T-element cooking technology in tandem with the Base's fire
prevention and safety initiatives successfully eliminated 100% of the stovetop
cooking fires at its Naval Station based on a pre-and-post analysis of 600
housing units over the past 18 months.
Commander U.S. Naval Forces Fleet Activity Sasebo, Japan, Gerald Clarke,
said of the results, "This product does everything it is supposed to do - help
eliminate cooking fires."
For the first time ever the number one cause of household fire, stove top
cooking, a problem that has remained consistent since the fire prevention
community began collecting data has been eliminated in a statistically
relevant sample study under the watchful eye of the United States Naval Fire
According to the National Fire Protection Association household fires
result in direct losses of close to $1 billion annually. The U.S. Home Safety
Council estimates that the average annual medical cost of residential fires in
the US is $7 billion. Stove top cooking is the Number One cause of residential
fire in North America and on U.S. military bases globally. To date the only
means of prevention has been education.
Fire Chief Wayne Senter, President of the Washington Fire Chiefs
Association, said, "Our national stovetop fire incidence rate has stabilized
at about 40% of all residential fires over the last few years. This is mainly
due to strong fire prevention education efforts from local fire departments.
However, Safe-T-element provides an engineering solution that eliminates
stovetop cooking fires, that's zero fire loss, zero injuries and zero deaths."
Naval Station Sasebo has approximately 600 family housing units on its
base all of which are equipped with electric stoves. In the spring of 2007
Sasebo purchased its first Safe-T-element unit as a trial to test its
performance. Based on the success of that trial Sasebo purchased
Safe-T-elements to equip 545 ranges in June 2007 and began implementing them
in housing units being renovated or as new personnel moved in to ensure a
seamless transition. By the beginning of 2008, 95% of Sasebo's housing units
were equipped with the Safe-T-element technology. Since then the Sasebo Naval
Station has experienced "ZERO" cooking fires, for the first time ever.
Sasebo Fire Prevention Chief Moses Gibbs III said, "I believe in this
product and our installation program has been a complete success."
As a result of this success, the Safe-T-element technology is now
mandated on all stoves on the Sasebo base for residential housing. All scope
of work, engineering and technical drawings include the technology as a design
and purchasing requirement.
Pioneering Technology was recently invited by the Deputy Director of U.S.
Navy Fire & Emergency Services in Washington, DC to present the technology and
the results of this Case Study to the Navy's Fire Prevention Working Group in
Crystal City Virginia. Based on the success of this presentation Pioneering
was invited to present yesterday at the Department of Defense's Fire and
Emergency Services Training Conference in Dallas.
Pioneering CEO Kevin Callahan said, "This technology has been a long time
coming, taking time to gather definitive statistical evidence like this.
Results like these are what are driving fire prevention and safety officials
to encourage legislators, regulators and stove manufacturers, to recognize the
potential of this technology for saving lives, properties, energy and tax
Safe-T-element was also recently recognized by the US Air Force as an
alternative means of compliance with their UFC 3-600-01 military code
requirement for a range fire safety system, meaning that a range that includes
the Safe-T-element technology is considered a "fire safe" range and is one of
only two technologies that must be included in all commercial stove
