TORONTO, Aug. 14 /CNW/ - The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario
(ETFO) presented Shelly Jan, president of the Peel Occasional Teacher Local,
with the Local Leadership Award at its annual meeting today.
The award may be granted to an active ETFO member who has provided
outstanding leadership and service at the local level during the previous
school year, has demonstrated high standards of personal and professional
ethics, and has advocated the objects and goals of ETFO.
"Shelly was nominated because of a project she initiated - the
Internationally Trained Teachers' Forum," said ETFO President Emily Noble.
"She recognized that many of the internationally educated teachers within the
local would benefit from focused professional development that would help them
effectively adapt to the Ontario education environment.
"These monthly sessions were planned based upon a needs assessment of the
participants and were modified as situations or challenges arose. Shelly
encourages the participants to actively pursue professional development. The
participants are enthusiastic about the program; many credit it with helping
them gain the necessary confidence to be successful in teaching in their
adopted country," Noble said.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents more than
70,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
