TORONTO, April 16 /CNW/ - Gina Godfrey's much anticipated Pearls of
Wisdom art show opens today at Toronto's System 4 Gallery. The show highlights
Gina's personal interest in mixed media and especially pieces of original
artwork or photographs that have been printed on a transparency or
experimented with until the desired result is achieved.
"Everybody sees what they want in art work," adds System 4 Gallery owner
Chuck Kochman. "With Gina's work, it is so personal, yet it allows people to
look at a piece time and time again and still find pleasure in it. We call
that inclusive art, and that is why we are pleased to be hosting Gina's show.
Our gallery, like Gina's work, is all about inclusiveness."
Gina has always been mesmerized by methods of reproduction, still life
and life drawing. Her portraiture began professionally at 18 years old with
charcoal portraits that she sold in her spare time before more formal training
at Central Technical School. There, her education continued in the art of life
drawing and still life with such esteemed professors as Robert Ross and Doris
McCarthy, who have continued to greatly influence Gina's work.
"My art goes through so many processes," explains Gina. "In the case of
the art being showcased today, I played with it until I achieved what became
most pleasing to me. In earlier years I might have called this work a happy
accident, but I think the term Pearls of Wisdom has a more positive
After retiring as a citizen court judge, Gina studied printmaking at the
Ontario College of Art and Design. Her biggest inspirations there came from
the works of Warhol, Rauschenberg and Peter Max. In 2000, she received a
silver award for Handmade Printed Work in Japan.
