Outstanding Canadian athletes join Calgary-led fight against global blindness

CALGARY, May 7 /CNW/ - Two outstanding Calgary-based athletes are
dedicating some of their tremendous energy to the fight against global
blindness. Both women are joining forces with Calgary's own Operation Eyesight
to help prevent and treat unnecessary blindness, which has reached epidemic
proportions in the developing world.
International rugby star and Olympic bobsleigh contender, Heather Moyse
and ultra-marathon runner, Norma Bastidas will speak at Operation Eyesight's
Event at Nickle Arts Museum, University of Calgary that will also feature
stories of individuals and communities forever changed through innovative
development projects funded by caring Canadians.
Moyse, who is currently in Calgary training for the Vancouver 2010
Olympics finished fourth with pilot Helen Upperton in the 2006 Olympics in
Turin, Italy and earned four medals in the 2005/2006 World Cup bobsleigh
circuit. A versatile athlete, she has also represented Canada in 15
international rugby games as a member of the Women's Senior Rugby teams.
Bastidas is currently nearing the half-way mark in her quest to run seven
gruelling ultra-marathons on seven continents in seven months. She has
completed races in Brazil, Antarctica and Australia and will run the Iron
Horse ultra 100 in St. Paul, Alta May 8-10.
"The goal of the 777 Run for Sight is to communicate how lucky we are to
have the gift of sight and to share our good fortune with others who aren't so
lucky," says Bastidas. She hopes to raise at least $100,000 for medical
research in Canada and to support Operation Eyesight's work overseas.
