Ottawa school student sole Canadian selected to attend International Peace Camp

    OTTAWA, Dec. 4 /CNW Telbec/ - Ottawa's Elmwood School student Genevieve
McSpaden has been selected to attend The People to People International Peace
Camp to be held this year in Cairo, Egypt from December 6-16, 2007. Of
50 young adults selected from around the world, Ms. McSpaden will be the sole
Canadian delegate at the upcoming conference.
The People to People International (PTPI) Peace Camp is an enriched
environment where young adults (ages 16-19) from around the world gather for
ten days of cultural exchange. The PTPI Peace Camp provides the opportunity
for these delegates of diverse nationalities and religions to express their
views freely with one another. Through discussions and classroom sessions, the
delegates will learn to start the peace process from within this group, and
eventually apply it to their own communities and nations. Sessions will
include the topics of leadership, communications, team building, conflict
management and stakeholder involvement.
"As the only Canadian delegate, I am honoured to represent both Elmwood
School and Canada at the Peace Camp. These Peace Camps gather young people
together to promote the cause of peace and security around the world, and I am
thrilled to be chosen," said 16 year old McSpaden. When she's not busy with
school, McSpaden immerses herself as a volunteer with the Alzheimer's Society
and at the Children's Museum. She also studies the violin and is an
accomplished singer - interests which complement her passion for science.
"We are very excited to have one of our students take part in this
amazing adventure. At Elmwood School our curriculum advocates global
leadership and citizenship," said Suzana Szymanski, Acting Head of Elmwood
School. "The idea behind the Peace Camp is the youth of today will play an
important role that will connect the world with Peace through understanding
and tolerance."
