Ottawa-Carleton Elementary Teachers Strike Tentative Deal

TORONTO, April 24 /CNW/ - Elementary public school teachers, members of
the Ottawa-Carleton Elementary Teacher Local of the Elementary Teachers'
Federation of Ontario (ETFO), reached a tentative collective agreement with
the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board late last night following a lengthy
bargaining session.
"Last night's tentative agreement is a win for everyone. It brings my
members the working conditions they deserve, which will translate into
improved learning conditions for elementary students. The Ottawa-Carleton
community will also benefit from the board's ability to hire additional
specialist teachers through the resources provided by the provincial
framework," said ETFO President David Clegg.
"The hard work of the ETFO negotiating team has resulted in a good and
solid agreement for my members, with improvements in both working conditions
and benefits. I look forward to implementing the new changes to the contract,"
said Peter Giuliani, President of the ETFO Ottawa-Carleton Elementary Teacher
Details of the agreement will be available following a members'
ratification vote.
The Ottawa-Carleton Elementary Teacher Local represents approximately
2,800 public elementary school teachers. Their last contract expired August
31, 2008.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000
elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
